Election manipulation: Does the electoral system manipulate our votes?
The row over the Chief Election Commissioner, disputed electoral roll revisions, and the now-common phrase "vote chori" have put a blunt question back on the table: can any electoral system be trusted to simply record our choices, or does it inevitably shape them? Tonight is not about reaching a verdict on one commission — nobody in this room counted the votes. It is about the experience of doubt: what makes you trust a number you cannot personally check, what would actually change your mind, and what your own suspicion costs you.
The opening question
On a scale of 1 to 10, how much faith do you have in the election system — and why?
Everyone in the room answers this in one line before any card is opened. Write the answers down; you will come back to them.
The cards
12 ways into the topic
Each card is independent. Your group votes on which to open, and four or five is plenty for an hour. Behind every card sit three prompts, one at a time, that only appear once it is opened on the board. Unopened cards keep for next time.

Why The System Mostly Works

Deciding Not To Vote
Some people have stopped voting because they think the result is already decided. Others vote every time for exactly the same reason.
The line to leave with
If nobody had ever told you to doubt the count, would you have doubted it on your own — and does that change how much your doubt is worth?
