Should Hindi Be India's National Language: History, Politics, and Future

A 60-minute session, held on Sunday 24 August 2025, on whether Hindi should be India's national language. It stays away from party politics and looks at where the question lands in ordinary life: the auto ride in a new city, the circular from school, the station signboard, the office where lunch happens in Hindi, the accent someone copies at a wedding. Is one shared language glue or pressure, and who is expected to adjust? Twelve independent cards. Open three or four.

The opening question

When you meet an Indian stranger and have no idea where they're from, which language do you start in?

Everyone in the room answers this in one line before any card is opened. Write the answers down; you will come back to them.

The cards

12 ways into the topic

Each card is independent. Your group votes on which to open, and four or five is plenty for an hour. Behind every card sit three prompts, one at a time, that only appear once it is opened on the board. Unopened cards keep for next time.

  1. 1

    Learning The Local Language

You move to Bengaluru for a new job. The auto driver speaks Kannada. You try Hindi, then English, then pointing.

  2. 2

    Being Teased For Your Accent

You speak Hindi, but not the way they do. Someone copies your accent and the whole table laughs. You laugh too.

  3. 3

    Hindi In Every School

Your child is six. A note from school says Hindi will be taught from Class 1, along with your language and English. Some parents are thrilled.

  4. 4

    Hindi On Signboards And Packets

The station board shows the town's name in three scripts. One night someone paints over the Hindi in black.

  5. 5

    Hindi For Jobs And Exams

You're a bright engineer from Madurai with a great job in Delhi. At lunch everyone switches to Hindi, and you sit quietly with your tiffin.

  6. 6

    Hindi Speakers Away From Home

You moved from Patna to Bengaluru for work. You never voted for any language rule. Yet a stranger snaps at you for speaking Hindi.

  7. 7

    North Indians Learning Southern Languages

Children in Chennai are often told Hindi will help them one day. Nobody tells children in Lucknow that Tamil will help them.

  8. 8

    One Language For India

You're at a wedding with guests from six states. Nobody shares a language except bits of Hindi and English.

  9. 9

    Your Language Called A Dialect

Your grandmother speaks Bhojpuri, or Marwari, or Tulu. At school people call it a dialect, or just village talk. Slowly, you stop speaking it.

  10. 10

    Being Assumed To Speak Hindi

You're from Kerala, or Mizoram, or Tamil Nadu. A shopkeeper in Delhi greets you in fast Hindi, and frowns when you answer in English.

  11. 11

    Hindi Films And Songs

You never studied Hindi. But you know every word of three Shah Rukh Khan songs, and you sing them loudly at every wedding.

  12. 12

    Why This Fight Is Overblown

Online, it looks like a war: Hindi against everyone. Then you actually travel.

The line to leave with

Which language have you always expected other people to meet you in, and when did you last go to meet someone in theirs?
